Mayor Emanuel and CTA President Forrest Claypool unveiled new pieces of public artwork that will go on display at stations on the Red Line's north branch that received renovations last year. In doing so, they also placed a call for artists to submit their works for consideration in being displayed in the stations being rehabbed as part of the Red Line South reconstruction, and for an artist to create art for the Wilson station, which will be rebuilt to accommodate Red and Purple Line trains.

Emanuel said, “This artistic initiative allows all CTA riders to gain a more personal understanding of the uniqueness, history and diversity of our city’s neighborhoods as they travel throughout out city.” Claypool added, “The artwork will reflect the unique, vibrant communities that surround each station and extend the benefits of our station improvements to every customer who walks through our station doors." The artwork was paid for with $621,000 in Federal Transit Administration transit enhancement funds.

Details for the Call for Artists are available here and due July 18. A public hearing for the Wilson Red Line Station art project is scheduled for 6 p.m. July 2 at Weiss Memorial Hospital Auditorium (4646 N. Marine Drive). Public hearings for the Red Line South public art project are set for 6 p.m. June 27 at Greater Harvest Missionary Baptist Church (5141 S.
