A couple of Sony's most lasting mascots are getting their own animated movie. The company announced today that a Ratchet & Clank movie is on the way, set to release in theaters in 2015. Insomniac is consulting in the production, animation, and screenplay, and recent series writer T.J. Fixman is penning the script.

The PlayStation Blog reveals that the actual production duties will be split between two studios: Rainmaker Entertainment (Escape from Earth), and Blockade Entertainment. According to its LinkedIn profile, Blockade uses game assets to create commercials, websides, trailers, and DVD films. Insomniac also promised a sale on Ratchet & Clank games to celebrate the announcement, with details forthcoming.

"We've always thought 'Ratchet and Clank' would be a fantastic all-ages movie and are thrilled our intergalactic heroes will finally get their chance to shine on the big screen," Insomniac founder Ted Price told Variety. "Insomniac is especially honored to play a hands-on role with the film's production, including the screenplay, consulting on character development and animation, and adding support to the film's marketing."

The movie is said to feature the original voice cast, and Insomniac is taking care to broaden the audience without alienating the existing fan base. IGN reports that Jericca Cleland, who did cinemtography work for Toy Story 2 and Finding Nemo, will direct.

I've only played Crack in Time but I'll definitely go see this when it comes out. It makes me wonder why this wasn't greenlit years ago.

Can't wait to see this. I love the games! The characters where always well done! Insomniac did a great job with the cutscenes too. Glad to hear they'll have a large part in getting this made. Maybe if this turns out good we can get a jak and daxter movie next although I highly doubt that.
