CHICAGO — A South Chicago woman was the latest of five people to be gunned down in a bloody 12-hour span that saw 10 others wounded in shootings across the South and West sides Wednesday.

The woman, later identified as Linda Williams, 56, was shot in the 1700 block of East 79th Street in the South Shore neighborhood about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, officials said.

Police heard gunshots and discovered the Williams lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound in her head, said Officer Amina Greer, a Chicago Police Department spokeswoman.

Williams was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead at 1:43 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The mayhem came on the same day President Barack Obama was in Chicago to raise money for congressional Democrats, and he addressed the violence that's plaguing neighborhoods around his Kenwood home, where he spent the night Wednesday.

"There are still kids just a few miles from here who are threatened by gun violence, who aren't in a school that is giving them what they need to compete in this 21st century and whose prospects are dim. If we're honest — not because they don't have the innate capacity, but because we as a society have decided that's not our priority," the president said.

Earlier Wednesday, four men were killed in separate shootings on the South Side.

About 1 p.m., a 27-year-old man was standing in a lot in the 12200 block of South Halsted Street in West Pullman when a gunman got out of a light-colored vehicle and opened fire, Greer said.

The man was hit multiple times and was found unresponsive by police. He was taken to Roseland Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police believe the shooting was possibly gang-related, Greer said.

An hour later, 34-year-old Michael Kizer was fatally shot in Roseland by two men in the first block of West 107th Street, where he lived, officials said. Kizer was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, said Officer Daniel O'Brien, a Police Department spokesman.

About 7 p.m., a 36-year-old man was shot dead in the 7500 block of South Carpenter Street in Englewood, authorities said. He was hit multiple times and pronounced dead on the scene. His name was not released as of early Thursday morning.

He was later identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as Scottie Cartledge, of the 6300 block of South Fairfield Avenue.

About the same time, police rushed to the 7000 block of South Normal Avenue in Englewood after two people were shot and wounded. A man in his 20's was hit in his stomach, and another was shot in his buttocks and ankle, Greer said.

Vaughan Allison, 20, was later pronounced dead at 6:37 a.m. at Stroger Hospital from several gun shot wounds from that shooting, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Nine other people were injured in shootings:

• Early Thursday morning, a 24-year-old man entered St. Anthony Hospital with a graze wound on his head, Greer said. He was a passenger in a car driving near West Lexington Street and South Springfield Avenue when shots rang out, Greer said. The driver of the car took the 24-year-old to the hospital after realizing he had been grazed by a bullet.

• About 12:35 a.m. Thursday, an 18-year-old man was shot in the 6300 block of South Hamilton in West Englewood. He was outside when a gunman who knew him emerged from a nearby gangway and opened fire, Greer said. The man was hit in both legs and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where his condition stabilized.

• A 38-year-old man was wounded in his leg in a drive-by shooting about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 7000 block of South King Drive in the Park Manor neighborhood. He was taken to Stroger Hospital where his condition stabilized, Greer said.

• About 8:50 p.m., a 30-year-old man was shot in his leg in the 4300 block of South Michigan Avenue in Grand Boulevard. The man was taken to Stroger hospital in good condition.

• About 6 p.m., someone opened fire near the 47th Street Green Line Station, leaving four people wounded. The victims of the 5:48 p.m. shooting in the 300 block of East 47th Street, in Grand Boulevard, included a 15-year-old boy, officials said. Also hurt were two teen boys and a female whose age wasn't known. All were taken to area hospitals.

• A 21-year-old was standing in the 12200 block of South Carpenter Street in West Pullman when he was shot in his groin in a drive-by shooting, police said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where his condition stabilized.
