Pakistan election: Imran Khan walks after rally fall

Pakistani politician Imran Khan has walked a short distance, two weeks after falling and injuring his spine at an election rally, his PTI party says.

Mr Khan was fitted with a brace and was able to stand upright, Shireen Mazari, the party information secretary said. He walked unaided for about 300m.

Ms Mazari told the BBC Mr Khan could be discharged from hospital on Wednesday.

The PTI gained significant ground during the recent general election, which was won by Nawaz Sharif's PML-N.

Dr Mazari said a series of X-rays on Mr Khan's spine had confirmed the continued healing and good alignment of his back bones.

"His X-rays were reviewed by a team of radiologists and surgeons who were very pleased with the results," she added.

The 11 May general election has generally been seen as a huge success for the PTI party, which fell just short of becoming the official opposition in Pakistan.

The election marked the first transition of power between democratically elected governments since the creation of the state of Pakistan in 1947.

On Monday unofficial results showed that the PTI won its first National Assembly seat in Karachi. The results came after a partial re-run of voting following rigging fears.

The revote also saw the PTI take two Sindh provincial assembly seats in the city, reports said.

Thousands of supporters of the MQM, the dominant party in Pakistan's financial capital, attended a rally to denounce Mr Khan.

He has publicly blamed the MQM and its leader Altaf Hussain for the murder of the PTI's vice president Zahra Shahid Hussain at the weekend. The MQM denies the claims.
