Despite the fact that demand for 3D TV has been underwhelming to say the least—Samsung admitted about a year ago that sales are about 30 percent of what the industry expected—Google has decided to roll out the service to its Fiber customers.
In a blog post on Thursday, Google announced that for an additional $5 per month, Kansas City's Fiber customers can now get ESPN3D, and automatically now get (at no charge) 3net, an “extensive library of original 3D programming, including natural history, documentary, action/adventure, kids and family, lifestyle and cuisine, concerts, movies scripted series and more.”
You'll need 3D glasses, a 3D-capable TV, and a willingness to look a bit silly in your own living room.
As we reported late last year, Google Fiber is taking the Kansas City region by storm, and it's clear that lots of Ars readers want Fiber where they live. (So do we!)
For now, of course, the service is limited to Kansas City, Kansas, but with Fiber set to move across the state border to neighboring Missouri this year, those in the Show Me State will have something to look at, too.
UPDATE 2:00pm CT: Google spokesperson Jenna Wandres wrote in to Ars to tell us that ESPN3D costs the $5 extra, but that 3net is available at no extra charge. We've clarified the post and the headline above to make that more clear.
